【ラグビー】若手躍動も力及ばず──ジャパンXV、マオリ・オールブラックスに完敗
6月28日、秩父宮ラグビー場で行われた「リポビタンDチャレンジカップ2025」で、日本代表候補で構成されたジャパンXVは、マオリ・オールブラックスに20-53で敗れた。前半は17-15と善戦したものの、後半に突き放され、通算成績は1勝5敗となった。来月に控えるウェールズ代表との2連戦（7月5日・12日）に向けて弾みをつけたい一戦だったが、実力の差を痛感させられる内容となった。
その中で、ひときわ輝きを放ったのがWTB上田一真（神戸）だ。15人制代表活動には今回が初参加ながら、前半に2トライを記録し存在感を示した。特に前半9分のトライは圧巻。相手が自陣でボールを落とした隙を突き、SOサム・グリーン（静岡）、CTBフィフィタ（トヨタ）と繋いでから35メートルを独走。冷静にディフェンスの動きを見極めて振り切り、トライゾーンへ飛び込んだ。
近畿大学時代から頭角を現し、2023年には7人制日本代表候補に初選出。昨夏のパリ五輪でも鮮烈な代表デビューを果たした。今春から加入した神戸でも、プレーオフを含む7試合すべてに出場。本人が語るように「世界基準のスピードとパワーを体感したことが、15人制でも生きている」ことを証明するプレーだった。
しかし後半、HO江良颯人（東京ベイ）が5分にシンビン（一時退場）を受けたことで流れが一変。数的不利の中で連続失点を喫し、守備の綻びを突かれて5トライを許した。エディー・ジョーンズHC復帰1年目の今、ディフェンスの再構築は喫緊の課題だ。
それでも、Uedaをはじめとするフレッシュな顔ぶれの奮闘は、今後への大きな希望だ。新戦力の台頭と課題の洗い出し──この一戦は、日本ラグビーの再出発を告げる重要な試金石となった。
Japan XV fell to the Maori All Blacks 20-53 in the 2025 Lipovitan D Challenge Cup match held at Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium, but young talent like Kazuma Ueda left a powerful impression ahead of the upcoming test matches against Wales. Despite fielding a squad with limited top-level experience—only six players with full national team caps—Japan XV held their own in the first half, trailing just 17-15 at the break.
One of the brightest standouts was winger Kazuma Ueda, a recent addition from Kobe, who showcased his Olympic-level speed and awareness. Ueda, who starred in Japan’s sevens squad at the Paris 2024 Olympics, scored two electrifying tries in the 9th and 32nd minutes. His first try highlighted his world-class composure and acceleration: seizing a loose ball, he connected through Sam Green and Siosaia Fifita before slicing through defenders to score from 35 meters out.
Ueda, who developed his skills at Kindai University and made his sevens debut in 2023, has been rapidly rising in Japan’s rugby ranks. His transition to the 15s format is already making waves, giving Japan’s coaching staff a promising wing option for the future.
Unfortunately, Japan XV couldn’t maintain momentum in the second half. A yellow card to hooker Hayato Era shifted the tide, leading to five second-half tries from the Maori All Blacks. Defensive gaps and lack of experience were evident, issues that coach Eddie Jones must address before facing Wales. Still, the dynamic performances of fresh talent like Ueda provide hope as Japan builds toward the international stage.
