The women’s 800m final saw Kenya’s L. Odila (26), a Paris Olympic™ athlete, set a new meet record of 1:54.62—the fastest time in 42 years—to claim her first title at the event. In the men’s 800m, E. Wanyui (21) also won, giving Kenya victories in both the men’s and women’s races.
The race was led by Paris Olympic™ gold medalist K. Hodgkinson (23, Great Britain) and defending champion M. Moraa (25, Kenya), setting a world record pace of 55.73 seconds for the first lap. On the final straight, Kenya’s L. Odila (26) surged ahead, staging a dramatic comeback to claim her first title.
