Canadian Karl Tilleman’s seven (7) 3-pointers against Spain in the 1988 Olympics. This tied the record for most 3-pointers made in an Olympic game. Amazingly, Tilleman scored six (6) of these seven three-point field goals in only one half, which also appears to be have set the Olympic record for most 3-pointers in a half.

In his very next game, Tilleman broke these records when he scored ten (10) 3-pointers against Spain, hitting eight (8) in the second half. Tilleman’s record of ten 3-pointers has never been broken and it appears that his record of eight 3-pointers in one half has also never been broken or even tied.

Unsurprisingly, Tilleman has been described as “the best three-point shooter in the world” by FIBA Basketball Hall of Fame coach Jack Donohue. Similarly, Canadian Basketball Hall of Famer Brian Heaney stated that “there has never been a finer shooter in Canadian basketball history than Karl Tilleman”.

Tilleman was a prolific basketball player. He was drafted by the Denver Nuggets as their second draft pick in 1984, being the 4th highest NBA draft pick of any Canadian university basketball player in history. Tilleman was also recognized as the best Canadian university basketball player two years in a row, the first to accomplish that feat. Tilleman averaged 32.9 points per game during one university season, before the implementation of the three-point line in Canadian university basketball. Tilleman holds the highest free-throw percentage of any American or Canadian university player in a season, only missing one free-throw in the entire 1983-84 season for a 98% free-throw percentage. Tilleman was also a member of the Canadian team that won the gold medal in the 1983 World Student Games.

Tilleman was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, the Canada West Hall of Fame and was voted as the greatest athlete in the history of the University of Calgary by a considerable margin.
